NUCLEAR ENGINEERING

NUCLEAR ENGINEERING
The nuclear sector is one of the most demanding due to its complexity and the high technical and quality standards it requires. Its challenges are innumerable and span all fields of engineering. Consequently, the nuclear field demands the interrelation of different disciplines. At INGECID, we have a multidisciplinary team specialized in the nuclear field across various disciplines such as civil-structural, mechanical, radiological protection, safety and licensing, quality assurance, decommissioning and waste management, BIM, and software development. In the nuclear sphere, we combine the capabilities of our different areas of expertise to propose solutions and designs tailored to our clients’ needs.

COMMITTED TO SAFETY
At INGECID, we design structures, systems, and components for nuclear sector facilities, applying advanced simulations and various national and international codes and standards. Our multidisciplinary team integrates the results of each discipline into an optimized design, adapted to the requirements of each client.
We have extensive experience in the design of Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installations (ISFSI) and components for the transport of radioactive material, including the preparation of documentation and support during licensing. We have participated in ISFSI projects at Spanish plants and at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station (South Africa), as well as in Design Modifications for the ISFSIs at Santa María de Garoña and José Cabrera. Notable projects include ISFSI-24 Cofrentes, CNSMG Design Modification, ISFSI Zorita, IA Garoña, AT Vandellòs, and TISF South Africa.
Furthermore, we develop innovative solutions for the storage and transport of spent fuel or radioactive waste, even generating our own patents. The most relevant projects include MAB, ENUN 52B, MATRIX, SOLECOM, EOS-HSM, and Type B Packaging.
At INGECID, we perform radiological characterization and waste management following MARSSIM/MARSAME methodologies, with extensive experience in both operational waste and waste generated during decommissioning.
We have capabilities in BIM engineering and modeling for the management and monitoring of activities, as well as 3D scanning for the planning and execution of works.
We participate in projects such as the decommissioning of the Santa María de Garoña Nuclear Power Plant, the PIMIC-Oeste project at CIEMAT, and the characterizations of the Halden and Kjeller reactors in Norway.
Our involvement in the nuclear field, combined with our software development capacity, allows us to understand needs firsthand. This inspires us to develop tools focused on the management of decommissioning and waste generated in nuclear facilities, applying the latest technologies to optimize processes. These projects are being carried out for Enresa in Spain for the future management of all plants to be decommissioned (VIRCORE-SGDES) and for the NND (Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning) in Norway for the management of the Halden and Kjeller experimental reactors (VIRCORE-FLYT).
Likewise, we have developed a support tool for spent fuel management (COATI). This tool allows for the design of optimized loading plans, configuration of container locations in ISFSIs, and calculation of dose rates at points of interest on specific dates almost instantaneously. This enables verification of compliance with radiological criteria while adapting to the specific conditions of any container and any ISFSI.

The National Radioactive Waste Company (ENRESA) awarded the joint venture known as UTE INGENIERIA INSTALACION DE APOYO ATI GAROÑA 2022 the contract for “Engineering for the design, licensing, environmental processing, and construction management for the execution of a support facility for the ISFSI of the Santa María de Garoña Nuclear Power Plant.” The joint venture, formed by IDOM Consulting, Engineering, Architecture S.A.U., Westinghouse Electric Spain S.A.U., and INGECID Investigación y Desarrollo de Proyectos S.L., was awarded the contract for an amount of 5.7 million euros, after presenting the best value-for-money offer.
ENRESA entrusted INGECID with the execution of the contract for “Engineering services for activities related to the ISFSI of the José Cabrera Nuclear Installation”. The scope of the service included various engineering activities aimed at ensuring compliance with the safety and radiological protection conditions established by the Nuclear Safety Council, maintaining the safe operation of the facility, and preparing it for its future operation as an independent nuclear facility. Planned actions included the Periodic Safety Review of the ISFSI, the development of activities associated with recoverability and life management, as well as the design modifications necessary for the future operation of the ISFSI as an independent nuclear facility.
Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) entrusted INGECID to participate in the strategic study aimed at defining the future spent fuel storage system for the Barakah nuclear power plant, a key infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates’ energy strategy.
Within ENRESA’s Strategic Systems Plan, one of the priority axes for optimizing the decommissioning processes of Spanish nuclear power plants was the development of a digital solution that provides all involved parties with advanced tools for the comprehensive management of waste generated during these processes. This initiative sought not only to incorporate industry best practices but also to define future organizational needs that allow for more efficient and sustainable optimization of business processes.
ENRESA awarded the joint venture formed by INGECID, WESTINGHOUSE, and IDOM the decommissioning engineering services for the Santa María de Garoña Nuclear Power Plant, for a total amount of 24.4 million euros. The contract covered the development of activities necessary to obtain the phase 2 decommissioning authorization, the preparation of design modifications, the preparation of basic and detailed engineering documentation, the drafting of construction projects and technical specifications, as well as the performance of radiological studies, surveillance reports, and technical advice during on-site works.
