VIRCORE FLYT

At INGECID, as part of the international ICCircle consortium, we have developed an advanced application to manage waste generated during the decommissioning of research reactors at Halden and Kjeller, two key nuclear facilities in Norway. The FLYT project, commissioned by Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning (NND), aims to optimize waste management and support decision-making throughout the nuclear decommissioning process, enhancing safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The software leverages BIM models and methodology.

What does FLYT do?

  • Waste lifecycle management: The application organizes, tracks, and stores detailed information about nuclear materials and waste generated, covering all stages of decommissioning from planning to final disposal. A physical inventory of assets is also conducted, with each item tagged for tracking and classification. Waste can be sent for treatment based on type and classification, and the application manages its transportation by creating packages according to specific waste routes determined by radiological conditions and applicable regulations.
  • Radiological characterization and classification: A key feature of FLYT is the radiological characterization of assets and waste packages. This enables classification according to radiation levels, which is essential for proper handling and safe final disposal.
  • Mobile application: FLYT includes a mobile app designed for field operations. It allows operators and technicians to record data, conduct audits, and update information in real time on-site, ensuring efficient and accurate management.
  • Virtual Reality: The solution includes a virtual reality module that provides an immersive view of the work environment. This technology supports planning and operator training, allowing users to interact with 3D models of the process and ensure tasks are executed correctly in a safe and controlled environment.
