INGECID at course on decommissioning of nuclear facilities

13 June 2018

From 4 to 8 June 2018, INGECID attended the course on the decommissioning of nuclear facilities organised by the Gómez Pardo Foundation, attached to the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

The course was organised in collaboration with the Juan Manuel Kindelán Chair of the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) and was held in the Foundation’s auditorium. It is aimed at both professionals in the nuclear sector and PhD students in the area of nuclear engineering.

The aim of the course is to provide an overview of different aspects of the decommissioning of nuclear power plants and other nuclear fuel cycle facilities.

The programme included lectures given by a large number of relevant professionals in the field, from different organisations such as ENRESA, CSN, companies involved in the performance of decommissioning and the university sector, among others. More than 70 attendees participated in the event.

Offering a very comprehensive programme, the lectures covered a variety of topics:

  • Radioactive contamination inside a nuclear power plant with PWR or BWR reactor.
  • Licensing and regulation of decommissioning and dismantling processes.
  • Activities prior to plant decommissioning.
  • Control of risks associated with this process.
  • Conditioning of historical non-compliant waste.
  • Planning, organisation and management of the decommissioning project.
  • Materials management and waste conditioning.
  • Regulatory control of waste material clearance.
  • Cutting and demolition techniques
  • Uranium mining. Decommissioning of concentrate mills.
  • Lessons learned and limitations in experiences carried out at different plants.

In addition, the sessions were completed with a technical visit, on Thursday 7 June, to the José Cabrera Nuclear Power Plant, in order to learn about the dismantling and decommissioning plan, the current situation and the next stages of the project.

These conferences are of special interest to INGECID personnel, as they promote training and research in nuclear safety and radiation protection in nuclear power plant decommissioning processes, as well as contact with other professionals in the sector.
